About Christian Sexuality - Dr. Roy M. Myers

Exploring God’s Love in Christian Sexuality

Can Christian spouses enjoy active and indulgent sex lives and still live lives that honor Jesus?

Many contemporary Christian couples struggle with this question, which drives some to walk away from the faith. Others lose all hope of having a satisfying sexual relationship. Playful Practice takes a novel look at Christian sexuality, arguing that couples can enjoy great sex while serving the Lord. It questions conventional wisdom, which approaches Christian sexuality as a matter of being either spiritual or sensual—not both.

Roy M. Myers, Ph.D., D.Min., a pastoral theologian who served as a military chaplain, educator, and leader in ministry for over thirty-three years, invites Christian couples to live in the tension between sacrificial love and indulgent love. He describes Biblical Christian sexuality as something built around God’s love, and something that leads couples into the very presence of Christ.

You can enjoy passion in your sex life with your partner, but it requires practicing in a way that pleases your partner and pleases God.

Playful Practice: Exploring God’s Love in Christian Sexuality posits that, far from opposing forces, spirituality and sexuality are inextricable from one another. Passionate and fulfilling sex lives can (and should) coexist with one’s faith. Whether you’re working to learn the Bible’s teachings together or experimenting behind closed doors, experiencing God as a couple strengthens both your beliefs and your bond.

Drawing from biblical theology, interviews with husbands and wives, and his own pastoral experience, Myers proposes ways to explore love and sexual intimacy with your partner. This guide aims to heal taboos by encouraging open dialogue, and embracing how relationships make us grow with each other and with God.

“Sexuality is part of God’s design for human flourishing,” Myers explains. And there is no room for shame in the divine.

An Intellectual Journey into Sacred Connection

An Intellectual Journey into Sacred Connection

An Intellectual Journey into Sacred Connection

" In Playful Practice, Roy M. Myers offers a profound intellectual takeaway: that sexuality, rather than being a site of restriction, is a sacred, "playful" space for experiencing divine love. As a reader who prioritizes high-level ideas, I found his synthesis of clinical psychology and sacramental theology deeply rewarding. Myers brilliantly validates the complexity of the human character, arguing that spiritual maturity grows through curiosity and vulnerability. This prose is academic yet remarkably compassionate, avoiding dry didacticism in favor of an invitational, fluid style. For those who appreciate unique narrative structures and complex themes, the way Myers maps the "improvisational" nature of faith onto the human experience is nothing short of brilliant. This isn't just a guide; it’s a sophisticated philosophical exploration of how joy acts as a spiritual discipline. It is a vital read for anyone seeking a nuanced, encouraging perspective on the intersection of faith and the body."

  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Playful Practice offers a refreshing perspective on Christian sexuality, approaching a topic that many believers may initially feel hesitant to explore. The author, Roy Myers, communicates with clarity, wisdom, and grace, carefully explaining complex ideas without becoming overly graphic or burdening the reader with unnecessary detail. His writing is engaging, well-spoken, and approachable, making even challenging theological concepts easy to follow while keeping Scripture at the center of the discussion.

One of the book's greatest strengths is how beautifully it connects God's love with marital intimacy. Drawing from Scripture, his own research, and the work of respected Christian scholars, the author presents sexuality not as a collection of rules but as something that exists within God's loving design. Rather than separating love, sex, and faith, he demonstrates how God's love provides the ethical and relational framework for Christian sexuality. I especially appreciated his analogy of white light, illustrating how God's love contains a fullness that we cannot completely perceive, yet every aspect of Christian sexuality finds its place within that greater reality.

The discussion surrounding spirituality and sensuality was especially insightful. I appreciated how the author encourages couples to embrace, rather than avoid their differences. Whether it's communication styles, personalities, libido, interests, or other areas of tension, these differences aren't presented as obstacles to intimacy, but as invitations to grow together. As a result, marriage becomes a place where couples not only deepen their relationship with one another but also grow individually in their relationship with God. I also loved his emphasis on individuality within marriage. Rather than suggesting spouses lose themselves in the relationship, he argues that healthy Christian intimacy allows each person to become more fully themselves, bringing their unique personality and desires into the marriage while remaining rooted in God's design.

What stood out to me most is the author's repeated emphasis that sex should be a place where couples learn about God and experience His love together. Throughout the book, he continually grounds the reader in the biblical truth that God remains the ultimate authority over love, intimacy, and sexuality. He undoes the threadwork of modern secular thinking that has woven its way into Christian lifestyle surrounding sex. By rooting the conversation in scripture, he grounds the reader in a Biblical mindset.

Overall, this is a thoughtful, well-researched, and biblically faithful study that offers a unique perspective on Christian intimacy. The author's careful use of Scripture, theological reflection, and practical insight creates a compelling vision of marriage that keeps God at its center. If you're looking for a Christian book that explores sexuality with both reverence and depth while remaining firmly rooted in biblical truth, this is an insightful and worthwhile read. A Freeing Take on Christian Sexuality

A Freeing Take on Christian Sexuality

" Playful Practice was such an interesting read. It gave so much insight from Dr. Myers' study of Christian sexuality and God's design for it as seen in Song of Songs, a book in the Bible. In the book you learn how imperative it is to understand how sexuality and sensuality is healthy for the Christian couple. I think so much emphasis is placed on that because of how sex and enjoyment of sexuality has been portrayed in the church over the course of history. Dr. Myers does an in-depth explanation of God's love, then moves into embracing differences, and then how to make furious opposites a passionate part of the Christian couples' sexual relationship. I found it interesting how he even talks about a connection between the garden in Song of Songs and sensuality as if it is a sexual retreat. He indicates how it can be important to have that sexual retreat space in the Christian's home. The book gave me a lot to ponder! "

A Freeing Take on Christian Sexuality

" This was such an informative read. One I think both young and older Christian couples could benefit from - especially those in newer relationships who are planning for a future together. Lots of things get “lost in the sauce,” as the saying goes, especially in a relationship. Couples tend to form routines, and the intimacy often suffers. Add in some self-believed or taught ideals that can hinder and negatively impact your relationship with your significant other, and it can become even more challenging. Even if you (individually or as a couple) don’t take everything from this book, at least know that you’ll be able to gain some fruitful knowledge from it. Plus, each chapter is thoroughly cited and backed up with a plethora of information that is beyond beneficial. "

" In Playful Practice, Roy M. Myers deals with a question most Christian couples face in their marriage: Is it possible to be spiritual and still have an active (or “playful”) sexual life? Based on what the Bible teaches, he developed the concepts of “indulgent love” and “sacrificial love” and shows how we can discover God’s love in our sexual lives. I appreciate his argument that our love, manifested through sexuality, must be pleasing both to God and to our spouse. Each chapter is filled with references from the Bible, showing that sexual intimacy has a legitimate place in Christian marriage. "

"As a Christian, I’ve also struggled with the idea of sexuality. Reading words from a theologian with over thirty years of experience is enlightening. In the author's words, this is an invitation for Christian couples to live in the tension between sacrificial love and indulgent love. With references from scripture and more, the author shows that at the end it should be in a way that pleases both God and your partner. "
